Anybody interested in buying something they didn’t even know they were looking for might want to turn to Mr. MICHAEL BERKOWITZ, who recently launched VINTAGE RARE MODERN, a website from which he sells some very fabulous vintage fashion photographs, illustrations and books from his own collection. BERKOWITZ, the former head designer of CALVIN KLEIN’s underwear division, lives in New York City and started collecting at an early age. Says BERKOWITZ, “In the mid 1970s I found vintage CECIL BEATON photographs in London flea markets, and in Paris vintage silver gelatin prints by HORST. In the early 1980s in New York City, I went to the 26th St Flea Market every weekend. Manhattan is truly a sustainable island, it’s residents constantly recycling their inventories. Many sources of the material that I collected were retired New York City editors, art directors, photo assistants selling off their secret stashes through dealers at the market.” The photograph above of an all-American jock is by BRUCE BELLAS (aka BRUCE OF LOS ANGELES), known for his male physique photographs in ‘50s and ‘60s California. The print was originally purchased by BERKOWITZ from a former assistant of BELLAS’s living in San Francisco. BERKOWITZ offers it for $1200 USD.
