A true American treat is A&W ROOT BEER. The carbonated, non-alcoholic beverage made from the root of the sassafras plant tastes like a velvety smooth and frothy mixture of caramel and vanilla, and may be enjoyed as part of a ‘root beer float’ in which a scoop of vanilla ice cream is added to the glass. While many root beers are commercially available, A&W is the most iconic – popularised by A&W, the chain of fast food restaurants that was started in California, in the 1920s. It is difficult to find in Europe, but this can was enjoyed at BREAKFAST IN AMERICA, in Paris, with chilli cheese fries and a cheeseburger – two other hearty recommendations.

Grew up on A&W, Dog-n-Suds, and B&W Root Beer. Root beer still my favorite carbonated drink. Nothing like it with cheeseburger and onion rings. Oh, to be young again – cruising the classic drive-in. I now make a low-carb BBQ sauce using A-W DIET root beer, tomato sauce and assorted spices.

Great idea Karen! Although I’d say burdock root is not for berinnegs. It is a very healthy herb, but could also be too bitter for some taste buds. Stephanie
