In the very first issue of FANTASTIC MAN, in the spring of 2005, interviewee Mr. MALCOLM McLAREN mused over the beauty of a fish-mouth lapel on his bespoke ARNYS suit. Now, seven years later, the end is looming for the über-classic ARNYS, at least in the way it’s existed since 1933. Conglomerate LVMH purchased the brand last week, and will convert the breathtaking ARNYS flagship store in Rue de Sèvres in Paris Saint Germain (opposite HERMÈS’ swanky new boutique in the old LUTETIA swimming pool) into a BERLUTI walhalla. So, voilà, that is our recommendation for today: to visit ARNYS before doors close in December, and to enjoy a menswear store where time stood still. They still have the odd lapel-less, pyjama-esque ‘Forrestiere’ jacket that was designed for the architect Mr. LE CORBUSIER in the collection, as well as the most puzzling hunting-style blazers, roomy opera coats, fancy walking sticks and some great knitwear. The ARNYS shop is amazing, the window displays are amazing, and next year it’ll all be gone, so please go.

Super sad
SKWT:
I live just at the corner, and always stop by to enjoy their old fashioned windows/exquisite garnments. Sad.
Charles:
This is sad news. Why does everything wonderful get bought out and exploited?
Mr Clouston:
Embrace tradition, adapt for the future but don’t change everything. Sad.
terry saxon:
err, some people seem to be missing the point, they did have a choice – to be “bought out” or NOT!
Mr Clouston:
Terry, none of the comments are missing the point, it got bought out. this is sad.

Since Louis Vuitton hand bags are nowadays susceptible to mass-tige, LVMH tried to resurrect Moynat as an artisan producer in a somewhat artificial/overorchestrated way. With Arnys they have a brand with an idiosyncratic collection and “street cred” among the discerning connaisseurs and what do they do… fold it into Berluti. Pathetic!
