Some swim trunks are perfectly acceptable to wear in the city. I see successful examples at the gym all the time and elsewhere and they work. Not sure about those many upper layers, though…

I bought a nice pair of Orlebar Brown swim shorts last week and haven’t been wearing much else since.

Those are not swim trunks, they are dobie cotton shorts, they do not have a liner and are actually lined in jersey, swim trunks have liners, except board shorts, which have lace fronts and no pockets are usually made of nylon.
