To continue this most recent series of suggestions, FANTASTIC MAN’s editorial intern, JAKE MILLAR of Perth, Western Australia (via Reading, the United Kingdom), would like to present readers with another tip gleaned from his three months spent in the city of Amsterdam.
“A lot of Dutch food is well suited to soften the impact of any enthusiastic nights out – deep-fried rolls of meat (kroketten) or French fries swimming in mayonnaise. Tasty as these are, one of the great discoveries of my time in Amsterdam was the joy of Surinamese food, which is a sort of happy alliance of Chinese, Indonesian and Indian cuisines. It’s curries, it’s rice, it’s delicious. Seen above is kipfilet roti, which consists of chicken in a mild curry sauce, with beans and potatoes, and roti flatbread in a convenient separate package.”

Though it’s nice to see Jake has enjoyed his surinamese food, i have one remark: a real roti is prepared using asparagus bean, never with regular green beans. Roopram Roti is considered the best in Amsterdam. When visiting: go see the Tropenmuseum (http://www.tropenmuseum.nl/eCache/FAB/31/780.html) and end your afternoon at Roopram.
