  1. World Man About Town:

I would add anything by Lorrie Moore. Armistead Maupin’s series of Tales of the City is also good summer reading.

  2. Daniel:

Agree. ‘Michael Tolliver Lives’, which is Maupin’s new episode in the series, is the smoothest and jolliest read ever and can be tackled in half a day.

  3. Mario:

Dancer from the Dance by Andrew Holleran. Especially surreal if you read it on the LIRR and Fire Island.

  4. Charles:

The *Dance to the Music of Time* series by Anthony Powell makes for absorbing reading.

  5. charlie:

Yes yes amazing tip – I’ve only ever read the first part of DANCE TO THE MUSIC OF TIME, totally keep meaning to read the other um three thousand sections

  6. charlie:

And obviously DANCER FROM THE DANCE is beyond amazing, his later works maybe less so jolly for the beach…

  7. Drus:

pity the southern hemisphere reader, with all this talk poolsides and beaches. still i guess the books work for the fireside as well . . if we don’t like them we can toss them in when we’re done.
