From the challenging food stuffs department comes KALLES, a salty smearing that inhabitants of Sweden love to eat on their egg sandwiches. It’s like many local delicacies such as British Marmite and Dutch herring: the first taste is absolutely awful, but eventually one gets used to it. The packaging is a design classic and looks great in many a fridge. KALLES is made by the ABBA SEAFOOD company, which, alas, has nothing to do with the pop group of the same name. It’s available worldwide through IKEA, who a few years back made the error of dropping it from their offering – a decision that was reversed swiftly once all hell broke loose among devotees.
