It is common for a gentleman to have many decades of shaving behind him and still suffer from bleeding and razor bumps—such a shame. Those who still face difficulty with the razor may benefit from a pre-shave “microdermabrasion” treatment, which lifts hair follicles and gets rid of dead skin to leave the way clear for a closer shave. “Microdermabrasion” is one of those terms most often associated with skin clinics. It’s like a super-scrub, containing tiny granules that can scour away more than the norm. This at-home microdermabrasion treatment by the noted new American skincare partnership ALFORD & HOFF is created specifically for men, and frees the hair follicles as part of its process. A shave straight afterwards turns out to be a much less bloody affair. It costs $85 from Neiman Marcus and Bergdorf Goodman in the US, or £78.30 in the UK from SpaceNK. Meanwhile, recipes for homemade scrubs made from oats can be found on the internet, but they’re too distasteful to recount here. (Photo by DEVIN BLAIR.)

unfortunately its brand image does not work, David. Hideous packaging, horrendous website

Exfoliation is indeed important for a proper shave. I typically use store bought products, but you can achieve a brilliant effect by using crushed walnuts, papaya, and a small bit of lemon juice. Not only does it exfoliate, it brightens typically dull looking areas on the neck and face.
