We started this wonderful New Year thumbing through THE MAKING OF GUCCI, a proper coffee table tome on the house of GUCCI by RIZZOLI. The vintage photo collections contained within the book are especially inspiring. Mr. YUL BRYNNER wearing black horse-bit loafers with white socks! Mr. PETER SELLERS wearing dark-brown horse-bit loafers with camel socks! (We’re guessing the colours here since it’s a black & white photograph.) The 1970s GUCCI cars, in collaboration with GENERAL MOTORS and CADILLAC, are a joy to see. As are the several examples of men toting GUCCI’s G1038 handbag a.k.a. the HOBO bag, including the fabulously stylish Mr. SAMUEL BECKETT in a cable-knit jumper and corduroy trousers, seen in the photograph above. Our copy was a gift from the Italian house, who happen to be particularly good at giving gifts. The tome contains a reproduction of a letter from Mrs. MICHELLE OBAMA’s to GUCCI’s Ms. FRIDA GIANNINI. The First Lady kindly thanks the designer for her generosity and thinks the gift, a JACKIE bag, is “beautiful”. Alas, no mention of BARACK getting a HOBO.
