For more than ten years the Japanese artist Mr. HIROSHI SUGIMOTO has made polaroids of the colours created by the sunset shining through a big prism in his studio. Then Mr. PIERRE-ALEXIS DUMAS, the creative director of HERMÈS, discovered the colour plates and decided to print them onto HERMÈS silk scarves. Seven plates were used to produce a limited edition of scarves for the HERMÈS EDITEUR series. A book reproducing hundreds of Mr. SUGIMOTO’s colour plates was also produced: ‘Couleurs de l’Ombre’ or ‘colours of shadow’ and is seen above. Voilà, a delightfully obscure and wonderfully manic enterprise.

sugimoto takes photos which, while pretty, could be and are postcards or posters- surface level photography with minimal intellectual depth. one liners.
