Today’s recommendation is Mr. TIM COPPENS, who happens to be one of the most interesting new menswear designers in New York. Born in a small village in Belgium, TIM served as design director at RLX, RALPH LAUREN’s performance division, before launching his eponymous label in 2011. The transatlantic influence is evident, making him unique in a sea of heritage button downs. The clothes are an enjoyable mixture of Americana – ’90s CALVIN KLEIN – and Belgian minimalism à la RAF SIMONS and HELMUT LANG, the other menswear designer to hop the pond for a bit of urbanity. We spoke to the designer in detail about the linen bomber jacket from his Spring & Summer 2012 collection that he himself models above. “What makes it so interesting is all the combined structures, in different shades of black,” said TIM, “the leather used in different areas adds a structure to the casual drape of the linen. The patterning and the seaming, the placement of the pockets are all part of the graphic composition without being too loud. The shape and the combination of all these graphical elements is really becoming a signature. It’s an easy, wearable piece that was picked up by a lot of people from my team, men and women.” For those interested in picking up the bomber too, it retails for $1,425 USD at stores such as BARNEY’S NEW YORK, ISETAN and DOVER STREET MARKET, as well as online from LN-CC.
