Continuing with our exploration of the new, today sees a new brand: HANCOCK, from Scotland. HANCOCK produces a range of attractive waterproof coats and was founded by DANIEL DUNKO and GARY BOTT, both formerly of that other venerable waterproof coat manufactorer, MACKINTOSH. The pieces from the label’s debut collection, such as the single-breasted raincoat pictured above, are loosely based on the designs of THOMAS HANCOCK, the British inventor that the company takes its name from. (HANCOCK, along with CHARLES MACKINTOSH, patented the vulcanisation process used to make garments waterproof in 1843.) “We were inspired by his publication ‘Personal narrative of the origin and progress of the caoutchouc or india-rubber manufacture in England’,” says GARY. “The book includes these fantastic Victorian etchings for items such as raincoats and rucksacks, even a rubber shoe, that with an update of fit and colour are perfectly appropriate for today.” Most resplendent is Article 4 – revealed by clicking above – a shawl-collar number in the most delectable shade of pink. “It’s a take on HANCOCK’s city coat,” says GARY, “but during the design we kept asking: ‘If CÉLINE made a coat for men, could it be it?’ As a guy, it’s possible to have womenswear envy at times.”
