It is typically British to undercut the world class with the parochial. For two months each year, London plays host to a daily series of classical music concerts at the Royal Albert Hall, at which, should it be so chosen, audience members can stand throughout. It is these promenaders, who queue on the day and pay only £5 to get in, who give the concert series its name, THE PROMS. Today is a particularly fine day to promenade, since there are four separate BACH proms, including two parts of the “Brandenberg Concerto”, an organ recital and some of BACH’s work arranged for orchestra. Should promenading be impossible, it can all be heard live on BBC RADIO 3, as can every PROM. The season runs until September 11, and is always worth an explore, particularly the night of ARVO PÄRT and BENJAMIN BRITTEN on August 17. But please avoid the final performance, when the utterly unlistenable and excruciating LAST NIGHT OF THE PROMS occurs, a night of hideous patriotism that shows the British at their worst.

one would think that listening to britten would be far worse than having to deal with some lovely songs praising one’s country.
