In ‘Perfumes, The Guide’, the definitive encyclopaedia of perfumes and scents, from 2008, writer Mr. LUCA TURIN described DIOR’s EAU SAUVAGE as “a masterpiece”, although “a touch louder than I feel comfortable with”. He lauded the “pine-needles-and-rosemary accord”, the “Vietnamese-salad accord” and the touch of hedione, “a floral material that can wet the driest lips”. It thus remains a bit of a mystery why a masterpiece from 1966 needs to be updated, but such seems to be the rule of commerce. And DIOR did update EAU SAUVAGE, adding the word PARFUM. Luckily it’s still a marvellously classic and warm men’s fragrance, in a nice-to-look-at bottle. (Another recent family member, EAU SAUVAGE EXTRÊME, is to be avoided – too aggressive!)
