When Mr. ADAM SALETTI of Amsterdam stumbled across ‘THE ISLANDERS: AN INTRODUCTION’, his enthusiasm was understandably contagious. The book documents the first four years of work by Scottish artist CHARLES AVERY on his magnum opus project, begun in 2004, describing a mythical archipelago populated by a dizzying mixture of mundane and extraordinary beings. While AVERY’s drawings, maps, and sculptures are ravishing when taken alone, his lunatic ramblings on the ontological principles of the island’s inhabitants elevate this to a plane well above the typical catalog.
