In this final week of his time in Amsterdam, FANTASTIC MAN’s editorial intern, JAKE MILLAR, from Perth, Western Australia (via Reading, the United Kingdom), would like to present readers with a selection of tips gleaned from the passage of his three months in the city.
“I spent my first few weeks in Amsterdam almost constantly lost. The thing is, the city seems easy to navigate – bands of pretty canals, long cheerful streets – though it’s easy to be fooled. The canals are not straight, but expand southwards in concentric rings, and the streets twist and turn and often change names. If I have one piece of advice to offer visitors it is this: get a map. Worthy examples include this wonderful foldout model by INSIGHT (see above), which is laminated for extra durability and features all manner of useful information. I’m pleased to say my sense of direction has improved somewhat, but as recently as this morning I misdirected a group of hapless tourists who were looking for MADAME TUSSAUD. Though considering it’s €21 a pop, I probably did them a favour.”
