What a marvellous treat it is to spend the weekend being vicious with some spent plants. Those in the northern hemisphere should now be deep into the autumn gardening season of cutting back and restoring order before the winter frosts begin, a process for which a fine pair of secateurs is imperative. Use of the secateurs should be as decisive as the blades are sharp: cut back low and hard without pussyfooting about. Check with gardening manuals if there is any fear of harming the plant, but the rule of thumb should be a good trim never hurt anything. This pair is from HERMÈS, with the same stitching on the brldle-leather handle as that found on one of the house’s famous saddles. This means the secateurs will have a life much longer than a usual pair, though obviously care has to be taken to sharpen the blade regularly so they do not become blunt. They should obviously not be left out in the rain, nor should any gardening tool. And if a garden has been properly planned, the secateurs can be used to cut whatever flowers are still blooming for inside displays. (Photo by DEVIN BLAIR)

Oh come on, really? I don’t know a great deal about secateurs, granted – but I have my doubts that they will “have a life much longer than a usual pair”…
