A month or so ago, the BRITISH BROADCASTING CORPORATION debuted a documentary of such quality that it has already reached the status of myth. That documentary, on the birth of synth pop music in the UK, was called SYNTH BRITANNIA, and was first seen by the dedicated few, since it was on the BBC’s little-watched arts channel BBC4. Word quickly spread about the cerebral show, which featured interviews with such British synthesizer pioneers as Mr. PHIL OAKEY of THE HUMAN LEAGUE, Mr. GARY NEWMAN, Mr. BERNARD SUMNER of NEW ORDER, and ORCHESTRAL MANOEUVRES IN THE DARK (pictured above). Those in the UK could later watch it on the BBC’s website, to which viewers abroad have no access. Shame! These days, it cannot even be viewed by those in the UK anymore, since the BBC only keeps programmes available for a limited period of time. Double shame! The BBC should release this programme on DVD at its earliest convenience. In the meantime, should anyone wish to see this mesmerising, landmark documentary, it might be a rewarding idea to type the words “SYNTH” and “BRITANNIA” into the internet portal YOUTUBE, where the film seems to be available in nine parts.
