The French use the word ‘épatant’ to characterise something that is splendid or amazing, while modern gentlemen in Melbourne, Australia use ÉPATANT as the name for a rather splendid and amazing new store that sells goods for men. It’s a strange mix of objects that ÉPATANT has on offer: fabulous FOX umbrellas, underwear from SUNSPEL and SCHIESSER, and also ESTWING’s cast aluminium hammers with ‘genuine leather grip’, the gorgeous volumes of essays from NOTTING HILL EDITIONS, and leather goods from ISAAC REINA that are beautiful although not always so useful – who in Melbourne needs a perfect leather pouch for Parisian metro tickets? Well, that’s what is so charming about ÉPATANT – it’s seductive even if it doesn’t make sense. The enterprise is in Colingwood, the go-to area of Melbourne, and was co-founded by Mr. DENNIS PAPHITIS, the genius behind skin-care label AESOP. And part of ÉPATANT’s space is occupied by another splendid operation, the MINA-NO-IE lunch café, which is a good place to contemplate the possible purchase of a hammer or a wooden sledge from GLOCO (but it never snows in Melbourne).
