Vintage cotton dress shirts.
I love the feel of old cotton – so much so, I even sleep in my vintage dress shirts. There is rarely anything sexier than a man in a dress shirt and a pair of tightie-whities.
It really comes from four BROOKS BROTHERS shirts I found in a bachelor’s cottage on the North Shore of Long Island about ten years ago. I tried one on and that was that. I immediately understood the power of their simplicity and masculinity. I decided that day that it was time I dressed up every day. My father also wore a dress shirt or a white cotton T-shirt almost every day. He had come to the United States from Mexico in the late 1940s and worked at various race tracks in the Southern California/Baja California area, and was often the handler for many winning horses. There were tons of photos of my father well dressed holding the reigns of many horses next to their gleaming prize winning owners. As I looked through these photographs I realised I definitely had adopted some of my father’s style. Most importantly, I realised I had my father’s body.
I work on a lot of period films with their costume designers and many actors wear my personal clothing in period films. For example, RUSSELL CROWE wears my 1970s LEVI’S throughout the entire film ‘American Gangster’. RYAN GOSLING also wears my Monster Trucks T-shirt inside-out in the film ‘The Place Beyond The Pines’. I purchased this T-shirt while dosing on LSD in New Orleans in 1991, the night of the infamous gubernatorial race between EDWIN EDWARDS, BUDDY ROEHAMER and DAVID DUKE (the former head of the KKK). All the BEACH BOYS also wear articles of clothing from my closet in the recent film ‘Love and Mercy’. In this respect, I have no problem seeing my personal clothing on another man.
I don’t pay attention to contemporary fashion whatsoever. I find it very boring for the most part.
I have a saying: “If you don’t feel sexy walking out the door then don’t walk out the door.” In other words, all my clothes are sexy. I also don’t own a mirror so all my clothes have to work no matter what. It makes it so much easier not having to look at yourself before you go out the door. You go with your gut, or at least I do.
The best advice I can give is to not care. If it is stained then toss it. Wrinkles – who cares? If you look good, you look good. There isn’t enough starch in the world that can change that.
Fun. I live for fun.
