The sale includes several pieces by Italian artist MAURIZIO CATTELAN, including the macabre installation “Daddy Daddy”, 2008. The piece was originally installed in the elliptical fountain on the ground floor of the rotunda at THE SOLOMON R. GUGGENHEIM MUSEUM in New York City as part of theanyspacewhatever exhibition in 2008. It was shown again in 2011 as part of CATTELAN’s retrospective and retirement show, this time suspended from the ceiling of the museum. “Daddy Daddy” is expected to fetch $2.5-3.5 million USD, which sadly does not include a pool.

Our favourite lot for instance, ROY LICHTENSTEIN’s Sailboats III, 1974, which is to be sold at SOTHEBY’S this evening for something along the lines of $6-8 million USD, is one in a series of three paintings of sailboats. We learn that despite a general dislike for the Cubist artist LYONEL FEININGER, LICHTENSTEIN “clearly looked towards his many Cubist representations of sailboats” such as Yachts, 1929. We also find out fun facts like the provenance of the work: it was sold by LEO CASTELLI GALLERY in 1974 to collector CARTER BURDEN who auctioned it at SOTHEBY’S in 1988, where it was bought by a private collector who sold it at CHRISTIE’S in 1998 to THEODORE J. FORSTMAN, whose estate is now selling it once again at SOTHEBY’s. Great!

Last week, Mr. MUNCH’s Scream was hammered off at SOTHEBY’S for $119.9 million USD. Over the next three days, DAILY RECOMMENDATIONS investigates what else is on the market. Specifically, what is being sold at the evening contemporary art auctions held by the houses of CHRISTIE’S, SOTHEBY’S and PHILLIPS DE PURY. Tonight, CHRISTIE’S auctions a total of 61 lots for what will be quite a lot of money. Amongst the works (BASQUIAT, WARHOL, RICHTER, SHERMAN, etc.) is VIJA CELMINS’ stellar Untitled #8, drawn in 1995 to 1996 using charcoal, graphite and chalk on paper. It’s an arduous but beautiful process – all the stars were created using a tiny eraser. The piece measures 41.9 by 55.6 cm and is estimated to sell for $700,000-900,000 USD.
