People interested in fashion may have noticed that over the last two months the fashion show circus has gone from Florence to Milan, Paris, New York, London, and back again to Milan and Paris, where the MIU MIU women’s show closed fashion week yesterday night. (Upcoming fashion weeks in Sydney, Rio, Lisbon and Moscow are being overlooked here for the sake of simplicity.) It is safe to say that fashion professionals and amateurs must be delighted not to have to look at another future fashion collection for another few months, and can concentrate on their own personal spring wardrobes instead. The striking sign pictured above was snapped backstage at the menswear shows in London on February 24, 2010.

As of today, FANTASTIC MAN has a sister magazine called THE GENTLEWOMAN – the debut issue was presented yesterday at a joyous cocktail party in Paris. Designer Ms. PHOEBE PHILO from the house of CÉLINE is on the cover, shot by Mr. DAVID SIMS, and Ms. PENNY MARTIN is the editor in chief of the whole project. The magazine will be available at newsstands around the world in a week or two, if not sooner…

ENJOYING SAINT LAURENT

The gentleman seen in the picture above is one of the bouncers at last night’s YVES SAINT LAURENT womenswear show, at the Grand Palais in Paris, France. He was enjoying himself in a giant projection of the YSL logo. Nice! Some images of the rather amazing collection can be seen by clicking on the picture. Especially the cape themes were very inspiring – for women and men.

DRESSING UP WITH OVERALLS

Mr. ANDREW T. VOTTERO photographed two pairs of overalls in New York, showing the styling touches that stave off any traces of a hayseed appearance. Click on the image above to see both looks. Both overalls are vintage, both are from the New York boutique CHERRY, and both are paired with evening styles to enhance the sort-of three-piece-suit effect of the attached bib and trousers. Nice!

AN EXHIBITION OF MR. ARI MARCOPOULOS’ WORK

Though born in The Netherlands, photographer Mr. ARI MARCOPOULOS has become known as a pre-eminent chronicler of American life: beginning by capturing the first stirrings of hip-hop culture after moving to New York in 1980, and lately focusing on his own family and the scenic surroundings of their home in Northern California. His images have been amassed in a nice retrospective called “It might seem familiar” at FOAM, the Fotografiemuseum Amsterdam, open now and running through June 16.

NIGHT-SCENTED PHLOX

A prudent move for the upcoming summer months would be to plant right now some night-scented phlox, which go by the Latin name ZALUZIANSKYA CAPENSIS. Grown just outside a window, the plant’s rich benefits will become apparent once its heady honey scent wafts inwards when the weather is warm. The plant is best grown from seed, either indoors in early spring to be later planted out, or outside, in either border or pot, once the fear of frost has abated. This packet was purchased online from trusted British plant suppliers THOMPSON & MORGAN, and cost £2.49 for 250 seeds. Once blooming, they should be given all the love they deserve, since once the season is over, this annual plant will inevitably die.

On a recent THALYS train from Paris to Amsterdam, FANTASTIC MAN’s Associate Editor, Mr. MATTHEW STEWART, was excited to learn that the conductor could scan the ticket’s QR-code right off a laptop screen or smart phone. Travellers who wish to go sans-papier are advised to board with a fully-charged battery since there aren’t always power outlets in the otherwise quite comfortable “Comfort 2″ class.
